Accessibility Statement
Last updated: February 2026
Being honest: I've built this app to be as accessible as I can, but it's not perfect. This statement explains what works well, what doesn't, and what I'm planning to improve. If something isn't working for you or your pupils, please let me know.
What works well
- Colour contrast — Text meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA contrast standards in both dark and light mode.
- Dark mode and light mode — A toggle in settings lets you switch. Your preference is saved.
- Reduced motion — A "Performance Mode" toggle turns off all animations and particle effects. The app also respects your device's "reduce motion" setting automatically.
- High contrast — The app responds to your device's high contrast preference with enhanced borders and outlines.
- Keyboard input — Children can type answers using a physical keyboard (number keys, Enter to submit, Backspace to delete) without needing to navigate the on-screen keypad. See Known limitations below for a note on visual focus indicators when Tab-navigating the keypad.
- Text sizing — All text uses relative sizes, so it scales properly. Questions and answers use responsive sizing that adapts to screen size.
- Large touch targets — The keypad buttons are at least 72px tall, well above the recommended 44px minimum.
- Semantic HTML — The app uses proper headings, buttons, form labels, and landmarks. Forms have linked hints and error messages.
- Screen reader support for login — The login and settings screens use ARIA labels, live regions, and screen reader announcements. Error messages are announced automatically.
- Skip link — A "Skip to main content" link appears when you press Tab, letting keyboard users jump past the navigation.
Known limitations
These are things I know need improving:
- Screen readers during the test — The timed test questions and correct/incorrect feedback are not currently announced to screen readers. This means a screen reader user cannot complete the test independently. I'm working on fixing this.
- 6-second timer — The timed test gives 6 seconds per question, matching the official MTC format. There is currently no way to extend this for children who need more time. The untimed practice modes have no time limit and are fully usable.
- Zoom on mobile — Pinch-to-zoom is currently disabled on mobile devices to prevent accidental zooming during tests. I'm looking into enabling zoom without breaking the test experience.
- Focus indicators on keypad — When navigating the number keypad with a keyboard, the focused button doesn't have a clear visual outline. This makes it hard for keyboard-only users to see which button they're on.
What I'm working on
- Adding screen reader announcements for test questions and feedback
- Adding visible focus indicators to the keypad buttons
- Re-enabling zoom on mobile
- Exploring an extended-time mode for children with additional needs (separate from the official MTC practice)
The official MTC and accessibility
The real Multiplication Tables Check has a fixed 6-second time limit per question. Our timed test mode matches this so children can practise under real conditions. For children who find the timer difficult, the untimed practice modes let them work at their own pace with no time pressure.
Device support
- Works on iPads (including older models running iOS 9+), Chromebooks, laptops, and desktops
- Works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge
- Responsive layout adapts to different screen sizes
Feedback
If the app isn't working for you or your pupils, I want to know. Accessibility is something I'm actively improving, and real feedback from teachers helps me prioritise what to fix next.
